Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi |
The former CBN governor and the current Emir of Kano, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi, has admonished the northern governors to start converting mosques to primary schools, especially in the villages.
According to Premium Times reports, the Emir stated this in the course of the Kano Educational Week programme adding: “I was in Morocco sometimes ago and I asked to see their universities. They
took me to mosques where I saw each serving as classrooms teaching Computer Science and other subjects.”Emir Sanusi said, the mosque is not used meant for prayers, but also used for other activities like marriages, educational activities and leadership trainings.
He maintains that the use of those mosques for other events will generate more funds, saves money and energy spent on having separate building for schools and other event centres. Those saved funds can be used for other activities such as training of teachers.
The government had spent over N30 billion on salaries of teaching and non-teaching staff of schools in the 44 local councils of the state, according to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano in his remarks.
He also said, Kano state government will be hoping to recruit over 25,000 qualified teacher through the new initiative by next year.
