Lagos Police accuses Community leaders of sponsoring Militancy and Kidnapping
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr.Fatai Owoseni, has accused some community leaders of encouraging militancy and kidnapping in their domains.
This is coming from the police boss due to the increase in cases of kidnapping and militant attacks within Ikorodu, Lagos state.
Owoseni said this during an interactive session with the community leaders in the affected area. In his speech, he alleged that some them act as informants to some of the criminals.
He said: “There are Baales (village heads) that are informants and sponsors of criminals in this area. They allowed militants to build houses harbouring criminals in the creeks.
"I want the royal fathers to call their chiefs to order. This meeting is convened to tell them that we will no longer tolerate silent conspiracy.
"Traditional rulers cannot tell me they don’t know who is who in their domain. All communities are advised to organise their local vigilantes.”

"Hi LIB, the deceased was my friend and I will like to remain anonymous pls. Dr Orji was an introvert because he was a sickler and he suffered from seizure attacks thus, he preferred keeping to himself.
"The social stigma (from the recurrent seizure attacks) was too high for him to bear. He used a driver because the seizure can come at any time.
"He wanted to do residency in Surgery so he could become a Consultant, he wrote the exam and passed but was denied the opportunity because Hospital management felt he could not cope with the stress.
"He wasn't really on social media because he was quite antisocial thus, his profile and pictures were not on the internet. So from all indications, i think it was a case of severe depression that was poorly managed thus, he felt hopeless due to his challenges and decided to end it in a Lagoon."

Rescue operations to retrieve Orji's corpse from the lagoon |
Orji allegedly ordered his driver to pull over the car on the Third Mainland Bridge on Sunday, March 19, alighted from the SUV and jumped into the lagoon.
His colleague, Essien Attah, who took to Facebook page to pour out some information, complained about many things hampering the progress of doctors in the country.
The article entitled ‘AND THE DOCTOR DIED’. Read what Essien wrote below::
“Dr Orji Allwell was my junior and also a graduate of College of Medicine University of Lagos. Indeed I left the great citadel of learning just when he was learning the rudiments of the profession hence our paths never crossed but if they had, I would have embraced him like a brother and share ward round tales of how we survived the likes of Professor Bode and Professor Odum.
“But Dr Orji is dead. I heard he jumped off Third Mainland Bridge in an apparent su*cide. What could have pushed the young man to take his own life? What level of frustration can kill the joy of life in an intelligent young man?
“Indeed the dark-side of medicine in Nigeria has once again reared its ugly head. A profession that is in the final death throes of extinction has claimed another victim.
“Indeed many see doctors as being on top of the food chain hence they carry a heavy burden. Numerous relatives feast on their finances like hungry vultures who keep on coming back for more carion. They can never take no for answer for it is said doctors always have money as if they work in Nigerian Mint.
“Besides the retinue of dependents, there is the drop in job satisfaction. The recalcitrant nature of government has left many doctors on half pay, irregular pay or no pay at all. How can a man with a retinue of dependents and a gamut of hungry mouths to feed survive when his small stipend is irregular and subject to political manipulations?
“And the frustration only mounts when you see your colleagues who travelled overseas faring far better despite your waning patriotic zeal that Nigeria will be better.”
“This is only the beginning of frustration to harbour such justified thoughts.
“Then there is the poor state of affairs in the health sector. Incessant strikes and decaying infrastructure have reduced doctors in Nigeria to a basal level of indignation and anger. It is now easier to squeeze water from stone than ensure the best possible care for patients.
"The most basic of life saving measures like oxygen and blood transfusion services are fast becoming a luxury and it is only a man of stone who will not feel depressed at the loss of a patient whose life could have been saved. Doctors see the poverty and the helplessness of the common man every day. And when you care for another human being, their problems become your problem as well hence you share in their laughter, sorrow or frustrations.
“This is the lot of a Nigerian doctor.
“But the worst culprits of them all are fellow doctors. How many colleagues called Dr Orji and asked how he was doing? How many went out of their way to show him love through his time of difficulty? A doctor is not super human. He is flesh and blood. We all need each other.
“Instead professional rivalry amidst the spectre of consolidating respect and loyalty breeds a medical milieu that is akin to a rat race or the dog eat dog phenomenon in a bid to survive shark infested waters of economic recession and financial stability.”
“Hence a tense atmosphere of unequally yoked colleagues is the bane of the medical profession in Nigeria that stokes the embers of sadness, hopelessness and depression.
“Dr Orji took it to the extreme but many more doctors are ill motivated and dissatisfied with the system. Those who can, have left while others are in the process of leaving. These are indeed the lucky majority for Nigeria has twice the number of Nigerian trained doctors overseas than the number at home.
“And the trend is worsening as even more are jetting out as their future in Nigeria appears ever so bleak.
“It is time for doctors to close ranks. Care for one another. Respect your seniors. And seniors stop belittling the younger colleagues. End the rivalry that sees parents eating their young and vice versa. It takes nothing to be kind to one another. Kindness and love are all Dr Orji needed but on his day of need we were all found wanting.
“Many a colleague are going through a lot but because of the burden of society, they feel ashamed to speak out. Hence the onus is on us doctors to seek them out and nurture them back to sound mental and physical health. That’s what it means to be your brother’s keeper.
“Patients should also learn to appreciate their doctor. This is the sole joy of a doctor that no one can take from them. Their service to humanity shouldn’t only be rewarded in heaven but a simple thank you can go a long way to making a doctor’s day. These are the worst of times to be sick in Nigeria and it’s also the worst of times for health personnel.
“I know so many who are without a job and are struggling to survive. Even those with a job are living from hand to mouth.
“Don’t mind the facade of Dr Orji’s beautiful Nissan SUV, the man had issues and just a calming word could have averted this tragedy.
“Say something nice to someone today. It might make the difference between life and death. Show love to someone today. That may give them a reason to keep on living.
“Life is too short to spend it unhappy. Put a smile on someone’s face today. Dr Orji is no more and the doctor died, oh what a day of sorrow for many have tried but have failed to overcome the sorrow of today. Be an overcomer today.
“Make yourself happy but its even better when you make someone else happy. It is well….and the doctor died, oh what a pity for a life lost prematurely to the sands of time.”
BREAKING: Body of medical doctor who jumped into lagoon from 3rd mainlad bridge found
Reports says the mother of Dr. Allwell Orji, who jumped into the Lagos Lagoon from Third Mainland Bridge, claimed that the recovered body by marine policemen was not that of her child (son).
The Zone 2 Police Command spokesperson, SP Dolapo Badmos stated that: “The mother has come to identify the body recovered, but she said the deceased was not her son.”
It was earlier reported that the corpse of Allwell Orji, a medical doctor, who jumped into the lagoon on the Third Mainland Bridge had been recovered from the Lagoon by marine policemen.
Speaking to The Punch, a police source said that Allwell’s mother had been reached to come for the identification of the corpse.
The Source said: “The body of the doctor was found at about 11.30am. We want to be double sure and his parent has been called to come and identify the body.”
The Lagos State Police Command has however withdrew its statement that the body of Dr. Allwell Orji who jumped into the Lagos lagoon on Sunday evening had been recovered.
Reports from Channels Television says, the Lagos state commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni had established that the corpse belongs to the medical doctor.
He said the corpse was found by the Marine Police at the Onikan end of the lagoon.
If the body recovered belongs to Dr. Orji’s, it means it took three days to recover the corpse after the incident occurred.
Before his death, the late doctor worked at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Surulere, Lagos state.
He was alleged to be on his way to Victoria Island for a meeting with the Medical and Dental Association of Nigeria when the incident occurred.
Recall that the deceased on Sunday, March 19, 2017 asked his driver to pullover before jumping across the bridge and into the Lagoon.
In a statement released by the Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA), there was a distress call of a man who parked his grey coloured Nissan SUV around 4.50 pm around Adekunle and jumped into the Lagos lagoon.
LASEMA said the vehicle and the driver had been moved to Adeniji Adele Police Station for more investigation.
According to his neighbours, the doctor had made several attempts to take his live four years ago, at the family’s two story building situated on Odunukan street, Ebute-Ejigbo, Yaba area of Lagos. But, during all those previous incidents, his neighbours were his rescuers.
Medical doctor who jumped into lagoon had attempted suicide several times four years ago
It has been disclosed that the Medical doctor, Allwell Orji who had on Sunday, March 19, 2017 committed suicide by jumping into the lagoon from Third Mainland Bridge had made an effort to commit suicide several times before the recent event.
The Sun News reported that, Dr Orji had attempted jumping down from the family's two-storey house four years but failed due to their neighbours’ interventions.
A man who preferred anonymity said: "Four years ago he attempted to kill himself and, thereafter, had tried doing so on a number of times, since then, his family had been monitoring him.
“We don’t know the kind of sickness he was suffering from, but we knew he was being monitored.
“That was why he was assigned a driver to take him around.”
The doctor and his family had stayed on the street, Odunukan Street, Ebute-Ejigbo, off Morroco Road, close to University of Lagos for years and then lost his dad four years ago.
“He was such a gentle boy, who never made any trouble. His family has lived on this street for long; his father died four years ago.
“Perhaps the driver who drove him didn’t know about his condition because he was engaged about three months ago.”
A different neighbour also said, some concerned persons had gone to the Police begging for the driver’s release from detention as he was guiltless and had no part in his former boss’s death.
According to Daily Sun, some of his colleagues at Mount Sinai hospital where Allwell worked before taking his life were interviewed.
Speaking to the reporters, the Chief medical director, Dr. Adedoyin Adeniran, said nobody can confirm that he is dead until his body is found.
“We don’t want to conclude that he is gone, more so when his body has not been found. It is only his family that can speak on that,” Dr Adeniran said.
A non-medical staff who pleaded for anonymity spoke wonderfully about the doctor recounting that he was the patients’ favourite.
She stated that: "Dr. Orji was such a dedicated person. He was the firstborn of his family. He was a thoroughbred doctor who paid profound attention to the very minute things in Medicine. He was such a quiet person and at the same time very active.
"He was most preferred by our patients. In fact, when some patients came here and he had not arrived, they would wait for him. He was sure to get to the root of things by asking penetrating questions.
"That was his trademark and why he was so much loved.
"Last Friday, he was here and we all played with him. We jocularly asked him to go and eat but he said he was going to see his patients in the ward. But we literally forced him to do so.”
The General Manager of Lagos State Emergency Management (LASEMA), Adesina Tiamiyu, who was at the place of the suicide incident, said they were still probing the waterways.
“We have expanded our search to go further than where it happened. We engaged local fishermen and divers. Also assisting are the Lagos Ferry Services and the Lagos Waterways Agency patrol boats, which were deployed to the waterways. We have informed the residents to look out for floating bodies, and we have also contacted the family and they are still in shock,” Tiamiyu said.
A LASEMA official also at the place of the event said the distance at which he jumped into the lagoon will instantly make him unconscious upon hitting his head in the water because the water would feel like stone when it make contact with his head.
She also stated that they have dropped the mind-set of only a rescue mission but have added that of recovery mission.
Mother of medical doctor who committed suicide refuses to believe her son is dead

A family member of the late Allwel Orji, who addressed the journalist at the family's home at Abule-Ijesha in Yaba of Lagos state, yesterday, March 20, said Mrs. Orji who is a retired banker, has refused to accept that Allwell, who is the first of her three children, is dead. She is still believe he would be rescued alive.
He said: "You people don’t know what we have been through since yesterday. Please, respect our grief. This is not a case of a grandfather that died and we want to celebrate it.
“This whole issue has been difficult for us. The mother is up there, not talking to anyone. Not even us who are very close relatives.
“People have been around her since yesterday so that she doesn’t do anything drastic. She has yet to accept that he could be dead. She doesn’t even accept people’s sympathies and condolences.
“As a Christian, she’s believing God that a miracle could happen and that her son won’t die. She believes he’s just missing and would return alive.”
In the meantime, all efforts to recover his body from the lagoon yesterday proved futile as operatives of the Lagos State Emergency Mangement Authority (LASEMA) are still combing the lagoon for his remain.
The General Manager of LASEMA, Adesina Tiamiyu who was at the scene yesterday afternoon, told reporters that he was not aware of any suicide note said to have been dropped by the deceased.
Tiamiyu said: “We are still searching for the body. We have expanded the search to go further than the point it happened. We have told local men around to watch out for any floating body and we have engaged local divers to look around for us.
“Patrol boats are in the water going round. We would continue to search for him. The family is traumatised at this point and unwilling to speak on the issue. I want us to respect their wishes please.
“We have established contact with the family and expressed government’s sincere wishes to them. We would also go back at a time they feel better because we would like to know what happen so that Lagosians and Nigerians can learn a lesson or two from it.
“It’s an unfortunate situation. But what do we do? The driver is with the police. The police would be more involved in the investigation.
“If we are able to pick one or two things, we would pass it across. I am not aware of any suicide note. His phone and car are with the police.”
