The power struggle between the newly inaugurated Peace Corps and the Nigeria Police Force has moved to another level following the arrest of the national commandant of the corps, Ambassador Dickson Akoh.
The commandant was reportedly arrested by the police around midnight on Tuesday, February 28, after raiding the national headquarters of the corps in Abuja.
The corps which is a youth-based organisation, came fully into limelight after getting approval from the National Assembly through a bill that was passed, but it was reported that police was not was comfortable with the move, thereby kicking against its operation.
According to Daily Post, a training facility belonging to the Peace Corps in Kwara and Abuja is currently not accessible as it has been closed by the police.
Prior the arrest, on Tuesday, during the inauguration of the corps in the presence of the minister of Sports and Youths Development, members of the National Assembly, religious leaders, traditional rulers and youth organisations, the NIgerian Police combined with other security agencies to deliver a peaceful environment for the success of the event.
Hours later, the Police Force carried out the raid..
“We don’t know where they have taken him to,” a source within the corps disclosed, adding that Akoh has been taken to the FCT command of the Nigeria Police.
The motive behind his arrest is yet to be disclosed as the police is also yet to officially admit that it had arrested the commandant as at the time of this report.
