About 1,623 people have been freed from the clutch of the dreaded Boko Haram terrorist group in Borno State by the Nigerian Army on Operation "Lafiya Dole", with the help of 10 civilian JTF.
The Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Usman, released statement last night, April 17, that the successful rescue operation was based on a tip-off received, yesterday by the troops and steps to take by ensuring safety of the hostages.
Usman said that the troop started an offensive attack on suspected location of Boko Haram extremist at Jarawa general area, Kala Balge Local Government, Borno State based on the information received. However, according to him, in the process of advancing, the troops met a heavy fire at Jarawa village and reacted accordingly but decisively.
He said, they also went ahead to clear and free Deima, Duve, Kala, Artano, Saduguma, Bardo, Msherde, Bok and Ahirde settlements.
Many of the captives need urgent medical attention is due to the entrapment in the extremist den. It was reported that the army medical personnel administered medications to the children upon successly rescue operation.
He said: “During the operation, the troops neutralized 21 Boko Haram terrorists, rescued 1,623 residents of Jarawa who were held captives by the terrorists.
“They also recovered three AK-47 Rifles with registration numbers 565222414, 563729686 and UF 3646, a 36 Hand Grenade, 12 Cutlasses and four motorcycles," the statement added.
"The rescued persons have been escorted to Rann Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp, while all the children were vaccinated."
